About ChartBasis

ChartBasis is a free reference for the economic numbers that matter: inflation, growth, unemployment, interest rates, bond yields, currencies and commodity prices.

What ChartBasis is

ChartBasis brings headline economic indicators for around 200 countries and territories into one place, with charts that let you see each number in the context of its history. There are no accounts, no paywall and no advertising.

It is built for readers who want the figures themselves, clearly presented, rather than commentary about them.

Where the data comes from

Every figure comes from the organisation that publishes it, not from a third-party aggregator. Country indicators and commodity prices come from the World Bank. Forecasts come from the International Monetary Fund. Euro-area data comes from Eurostat and the European Central Bank, which also publishes the euro exchange rates shown here. US Treasury yields come from the US Treasury, monthly US labour and price statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the UK policy rate from the Bank of England. Public holidays come from the Nager.Date service.

We name our sources here so that you can check any figure against the original publication.

How it works

New releases are collected as they are published, checked for obvious errors, and stored in a database. The website only reads from that database, so a problem fetching a source can delay an update but cannot corrupt a page.

Values, dates and numbers are formatted according to the conventions of the language you have chosen. Forecasts are always drawn dashed and shaded, so a projection is never mistaken for an observed figure.

Languages

ChartBasis is available in English, Spanish, Japanese, German and French. Country names come from standard international locale data, and numbers and dates follow the conventions of each language.

The text of this site, including the legal pages, is translated for convenience. If a translation and the English version ever differ, the English version prevails.

What it is not

ChartBasis is an information service. It is not investment, financial, legal or tax advice, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.

Official statistics are revised, delayed and occasionally corrected by the agencies that publish them, and some indicators are not available for every country. We do not cover credit ratings or stock indices, because there is no free primary source for them.
